14. The Meaning of Jesus’ Ascension

It has likely already been a tradition of the world in religous scope that makes the considerably big events related with its religious leaders into the feast, so has the feast of Lord Jesus’ ascension. This event has been considered as substantial so much, that becomes the feast and we must celebrate it. Have you ever found the answer why we have to celebrate this day? What is the significance of the event of Lord Jesus’ ascension so that we consider it as a feast? In fact, most of Christian celebrate the feast of Lord Jesus’ ascension without understanding; just blindly tail others celebrating the feast of Lord Jesus’ ascension into the Heaven. Unless we understand the meaning of Lord Jesus’ ascension into the Heaven, then our celebration of Lord Jesus’ ascension feast is meaningless. Noticing the Gospel, not all the writer of the scripture noted this event (Matthew and John did not write it). Whereas, the crucifixion event of Christ Jesus, due to its urgency and importance, it has been figured out in all the Gospel books.

In Act 1:9-10, the angel said: “Why do you stand here looking into the sky?” Do not be amazed watching the ascension of Jesus into the Heaven. The most important thing is how you prepare yourself welcoming His coming back. This sentence must be well-reasoned because most of Christians do not prepare indeed to welcome His second coming. In John 14:1-2, Jesus said: “I am going there to prepare a place for you”.

Residence or house is the primary need of human. That is why the government vibrantly builds houses, real estate, so people have shelter and comfortable place to live. Not only in this temporary world we need shelter, but after the spirit leaves this body, we also really need a shelter. The shelter of our eternal life is far more important instead. The shelter for the spirit cannot be built by the hands of man, whosoever the contractor is. Only the hand of God can make it true. Man can never obtain it although they are prosperous, except He who has the eternal home is pleased to give it.

Through His ascension into the Heaven, He prepares places for us, inasmuch as He wants wherever He is, so are we. He pioneered a path through His sacrifice, His death and resurrection, and His ascension into the Heaven as the absolute requirement and proves of His victory. He will return in His glory, where the home are prepared for us. This world is not our home, here we just stay temporarily 1. Hence death is not the frightening fear, but the golden bridge for entering the perfectly joyful life with God. This is the blissful hope. This is not an empty promise, yet the reality that will be experienced by each believer who has repented and born again.

In this case, we are called to prepare ourselves. The Holy Spirit has been sent to bring us unto all His righteousness. In John 16:7, Jesus said: “It is for your good that I am going away” By His going, He sends the Holy Spirit into the world to accompany (live inside) the believers. The Holy Spirit is parakletos (advocate, partner, and comforter). The Holy Spirit will work in us to make us worthy, as long as we offer ourselves to be worked on by Him.
